Okay now that I’ve finally quit Denny’s let me tell you guys about the bizarre fucking otherworld it is

  • The music and the room temperature are controlled by corporate. Corporate plays a lot of pop covers of Disney princess songs I’ve never heard before. I now have a dance routine to the K-Pop sounding version of Let it Go.
  • Our sign flickered fast and red and demonically for a week and the repairman said he couldn’t find anything wrong with it.
  • People did drug deals in, like, broad daylight in the middle of the parking lot multiple times a week.
  • It’s open 24/7. We had a backup generator none of us knew about until there was a massive storm one night and we looked out to see a tree knocked over and our lights the only thing on for miles. You could weather the apocalypse with no idea the apocalypse was even happening.
  • Regular customers included:
    • A man convinced the chemtrails are real who gave me six separate pieces of literature on the subject
    • A little person named Kevin who told me “sometimes I call myself a dwarf when I’m feeling whimsical”
    • An actual group of Neo-Nazis
    • An actual Earth, Wind, and Fire cover band (they played for us)
    • Twins who came in separately on the same day and I thought they were one woman changing outfits rapidly for the longest time
    • A Scottish landscaper who told us we “couldn’t prove he doesn’t know Simon Pegg”
  • I have more these are just off the top of my head

I can’t believe I forgot

  • two line cooks got into a really heated argument about whether Vin Diesel is bisexual or not
  • I asked an elderly man if he wanted to use the AARP discount and he said “No, I’m not a socialist”.

Before the computing era, ILM was the master of oil matte painting, making audiences believe that some of the sets in the original Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogy were real when they weren’t. They were the work of geniuses like Chris Evans, Michael Pangrazio, Frank Ordaz, Harrison Ellenshaw and Ralph McQuarrie Forever thank you, to their handmade art and the work of their colleagues, that made us dream of impossible worlds and fantastic places across Earth and the Universe.

I love this because I’ll be watching a movie and think “how did they do that? Is that a building they built for this movie? Was it there beforehand? Is it cardboard or CGI? Is that actually some place on Earth that they’re filming?” And the answer to all of these now is “nope, that’s a painting”. I can’t believe some of the most iconic, familiar shots were paintings!

whatthefnews

This is so common, I’ve got a dozen stories but I’ll start with these 2.

My fiance bought me a knife with a clip because I was driving early am and late and night back and forth for college. I kept that bitch clipped to the center of my bra so if I needed it I didn’t have to dig through my purse. And it came in handy, about a month later I was leaving a dance class and this guy approached me trying to get my number. I told him I was taken and I wasn’t interested. He didn’t take no for an answer and grabbed my hand, so I pulled the knife about half way out of my bra and as soon as he saw of he backed off. I made it very clear I would cut his balls off if he ever laid a hand on me again. Thankfully our dance teacher saw everything and got him put on academic probation with supervision.

If you feel like you’re being followed, make a scene, call someone, and get someplace safe.

In 2016 I was driving alone across state lines to take care of family, it was about an hour one way and I made the trip 3 times a week. I was used to this route and always traveled at like 3 am because of my schedule. NOBODY is on the road at that time, until about two weeks into this schedule a red pickup starts driving right on my ass for no lie like 30 minutes.

At first I thought he was just drunk because he kept swerving out of the lane and back in. But then I realize he’s yelling and having his hands and trying to get me to pull over. In the middle of nowhere 3 am. NOPE. FUCK THAT.

It’s a straight drive and he could obviously pass if he wanted. Whatever he wants I don’t. So I put on my hazard lights, called 911 and drove straight to the local pd. Bet your ass the second I pulled up to that police station his ass was gone. I reported it to the 911 operator then again to the cop when I pulled up and gave a full description.

I don’t know if they ever found him, but I do know I got home safe and that’s enough for me.

Words to Describe Hair

writingwithcolor

This began as a guide to describing Afro/curly hair but of course, I got carried away. From look and texture of hair, colors and various styles, this guide serves as a thesaurus of sorts for hair, as well as pointers for use in your writing.

Culturally Significant Hair Coverings:

  • Know the meaning behind head wear and why it’s worn, when and by whom, such as a Native Nation’s headdress, before bestowing a character with it.

Head Coverings Resources:

Afro - Curly - Straightened

There are many varieties of braids, twists & Afro hair styles; have some more!

Describing Black (Afro) hair:

  • Appropriative Hairstyles: Keep in mind that Afro styles should be kept to those in the African Diaspora, such as dreadlocks, cornrows + certain and many braided styles.
  • Tread carefully describing Afro hair as “wild” “unkempt” “untamed” or any words implying it’s unclean or requires controlling.
  • “Nappy” and “wooly” are generally words to stay away from, the first having heavy negative connotations for many and the latter, though used in the Holy Bible, is generally not acceptable anymore and comes off as dehumanizing due to Animal connotations.
  • There are mixed feelings on calling Black hair “kinky.” I’m personally not opposed to the word in itself and usage depends on the person’s race (I’m more comfortable with a Black person using it vs. a Non-Black person) as well as their tone and context (if it’s used in a neutral or positive tone vs. negatively/with disdain). Get feedback on your usage, or simply forgo it.
  • See our tags “Black Hair” and “Natural Hair” for more discussion on describing Black hair.

Writing Tips & Things to Keep in Mind:

  • Combination Words: Try combining words to illustrate look of hair. A character with springy coils that dance across her shoulders with every movement, the man with thick silvery hair slicked back into a ponytail…
  • Mind Perspective: Depending on POV, a character might not know exactly what cornrows or a coiffure style is, at least in name, and it might make more sense if they described the hairdo instead. More defining terms might come from a more knowing source or the wearer themselves. One book I read described a girl’s afro puff as “thick hair pulled up into a cute, curly, poufy thing on top of her head and tied with a yellow ribbon.”
  • POC & Hair Colors: People of Color’s hair comes in all shades and textures. There are Black people with naturally blond and loosely-textured to straight hair, East Asian people with red hair, and so on. Keep that in mind when coding characters if you tend to rely on hair color alone to denote a character is white vs. a Person of Color.
  • Related Tropes: There are tropes and discussion related to People of Color, colored hair, and light-colored hair and features.
